H2O - Prospector 16'4" Brute Force

H2O Canoe Company Prospector 16'4" Canoe Review

More than a century after the original Chestnut Canoe Company brought it to life in New Brunswick, the Prospector remains the most versatile tripping canoe design ever produced. H2O's Prospector 16'4" Brute Force delivers that same balanced, capable character in a layup built to take a serious beating.

The mid-sized model in H2O's Prospector family, the 16'4" sits between the nimbler 15'4" and the higher-capacity 17'6". The symmetrical, keel-less hull with semi-arched bottom and moderate rocker gives this canoe its famously well-rounded nature. It manoeuvres readily when you need it to and tracks predictably when you don't, carrying any load from a light solo day trip to a fully packed tandem expedition without losing its composure. Sharp entry lines handle large waves cleanly, and the semi tumblehomed sides work to keep water out of the boat rather than in it.

The Brute Force epoxy lamination is the right choice for paddlers who use their canoes hard and often. Rocky river runs, rough landings, and loaded portages are what this layup is designed for, and it delivers genuine resilience without the weight of fibreglass constructions. Available in Innegra/Basalt, Kevlar, and Kevlar/Carbon, ranging from 40 to 45 lbs, it's a tough canoe that stays manageable on the carry. H2O's ICG gunwale system and wood gunwale upgrades in ash or cherry are available for those who want to personalise their build.

  • Hull: Symmetrical, semi-arched, keel-less with moderate rocker
  • Brute Force Layups: Innegra/Basalt (45 lbs), Kevlar (42 lbs), Kevlar/Carbon (40 lbs)
  • Gunwale System: Integral Composite Gunwale (ICG) available
