Salus - Proto PFD
Salus Marine Proto PFD
Few paddling PFDs can genuinely pull double duty between whitewater play and multi-day touring, but the Salus Proto was built to do exactly that.
Inspired by the popular Salus Jazz, the Proto shares that same rocker shape and low-profile foam placement that conforms closely to your torso and keeps your arms free for both high and low angle paddle strokes. The sculpted fit sits lower on the body, which works particularly well for larger builds and bigger chest sizes. One thing worth knowing: paddlers using recreational kayaks with high seat backs may find the low fit causes some ride-up when seated, so it's worth trying on before committing.
What makes the Proto stand out is how much you can do with it depending on the day. Strip the webbing back and it's a clean, snag-free play boating jacket. Load it up and it handles flat-water touring, guiding, and extended expeditions with ease. The hydration back pouch fits 1.5 to 2L bladders and routes through a shoulder tunnel for hands-free drinking on long crossings. A removable quick-release tow belt, a relocatable quick-release carabiner module with five mounting positions, and two utility lash tabs give guides and serious paddlers real working functionality. The 500 Denier Cordura outer shell holds up to the kind of regular hard use that would wear out a lesser jacket.
